Closing Film at Osian's Cinefan 2007 : "Cut & Paste", Directed by Hala Khalil

  • CLOSING FILM CUT AND PASTE directed by Hala Khalil
  • The Festival will close with an award-winning Egyptian film, Cut and Paste, by Hala Khalil.
  • Cut and Paste begins as a genial comedy and gradually turns into a gentle satire. Gamila, young firebrand earns her living by buying and selling anything she can lay her hands on. She has decided to emigrate to New Zealand. One day, she meets Youssef, a decent man looking for more profitable work. The two agree to a ‘temporary’ marriage of convenience. Gamila's mother is thrilled to see her daughter getting hitched, but her support just makes matters more difficult for the new couple, and things do not turn out as expected.
  • This award-winning film maintains a perfect balance between a light-hearted drama and a grim look at the problems facing Egyptian society. The various characters grapple unemployment, housing, relationships, lack of opportunities and frustrations. The main characters seem to share the same the fate: nothing is finished or seems to reach a satisfactory ending. Their lives are a vicious circle of a cut-and-paste process.
  • Director Hala Khalil graduated from Cairo’s High Cinema Institute in 1992. She has made some short films and documentaries as well as a TV-series. Her first feature film, which won her international acclaim, The Best Times, was shown at Osian-Cinefan in 2004.
  • Main Event : Osian's Cinefan - 9th Festival of Asian & Arab Cinema - 20th to 29th July, 2007
