In July-August 1914 an international crisis culminated in the outbreak of the First World War. European nations entered into complex alliances and in less than a week Europe was at war with itself. The allied forces, England and France were compelled to draw its war resources from colonies. India, the crown jewel of the British Raj couldn’t be an exception. Indian soldiers fought this war in countries far from their homes, like France and Belgium, for a flag and ruler not quite their own. While some soldiers were awarded honors like the Victoria Cross, every soldier that came back from the war suffered physical and psychological trauma. Memories etched on their minds for as long as they lived.

Over a hundred years have passed since the Great War rattled humanity and yet no one really knows of them.
UNSUNG HEROES is a choreographic portrayal of the intense experiences of these soldiers as they fought in the trenches in Europe. It focuses on the internal trauma and memories, recounting their stories through a choreographic journey.

The inspiration stems from a series of letters sent and received by the Indian soldiers during the war.
