About the talk: Situated within a larger UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that was designated in November 2001, the Sundarbans is the largest area of mangrove forest in the world and one of the most biologically productive of all natural ecosystems. Its forest and waterways support a support a wealth of animal species including the single largest population of tigers in the world and many threatened aquatic species. The islands have great ecological importance as well as economic importance. Sunderbans is rich not only in natural resources but also in its history and culture and has played an important socio-environmental role, albeit kept mostly in the background till we have forgotten its relevance. Join the discussion with Shalmaly to discover the hidden treasures of this unique ecosystem.
About the speaker: Shalmaly Mukherjee is a Research Coordinator at Sahapedia. Apart from contributing to other knowledge domains, she handles the Natural Environment domain exclusively. Currently pursuing a doctorate from Delhi University on the history of Sunderbans, her research interests include socio-cultural history, film history and history of ideas. She is a trained Graphologist, Bharatanatyam dancer, Hindustani Classical vocalist and a counselor with the National Institute of Social Defense.
