Event Description : TALK “Towards a new concept of development” by Francisco Lozano Winterhalder, Seema Arora
Synopsis: There is no doubt that we have to apply a new paradigm in our societies, not only to reach the lost balance with nature, but to boost economy too. These two goals will allow us to improve the quality of life of all humans. The key word is sustainability.
Sustainable development faces several fundamental challenges. Two of the most important are:
- The struggle against Climate closely linked to the problem of the energy: Reducing emissions, applying systems of energy saving and a transition to renewable energies are some of the strategies to follow in order to stabilize our atmosphere.
- Searching a relevant model for production as well as for any human activity in which interact natural and social systems: Circular Economy is on the basis of these actions. One example: The water cycle considered in its integral context (atmosphere, rivers, lakes, oceans…, human beings and ecosystems).
This permits to consider the application of technics for reducing impacts, the rational use of water and achieving health levels compatible with a healthy human life.
In many emerging countries like India, it happens an important migratory flow to large cities, most of them already overpopulated, so they need urgently the implementation of sustainable measures. This is the case of the Smart Cities, whose strategic targets try to reach the balance with nature, economy and social welfare of their inhabitants. Nevertheless, all these processes need a fundamental ingredient: Ethics. In addition to that
and despite the use of the best available technology in every case, education and communication, focused on sustainable development, are absolutely essential too. Citizens have to incorporate all those principals in your own DNA. Thus, they will be able to act naturally in a sustainable way.
