Event Description : "Framing Nature: Gardens & Art in History" by Anita Roy, Dr Alka Pande & Tony Clancy.
Along with writer and critic Anita Roy and art historian Dr Alka Pande, Tony Clancy will talk about the relationship between the built environment and natural spaces – and their intersection in the form of the garden. Whether public parks or a private oasis, the garden is a place where many things meet: both wild and artificial, gardening is part art, part science and part sheer manual labour. And plants themselves have long been carriers of cross-cultural meanings, as they move around the world – sometimes establishing themselves as much loved icons of their new homes, sometimes going from exotic specimens to invasive ecological terrorists.
The speakers will look at how plants have been represented in art by painters since the 1500’s and by photographers since the 1840s, looking in particular at contemporary images, and examine – through images - what gardens reveal about the people who created them.
The events have been sponsored by Future Institute, Tarun Khiwal, Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd and Aim Television.
Tony Clancy is a photographer and lecturer at the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham, currently researching into gardens (taking the curatorial role in the current exhibition at Jor Bagh) and bio-semiotics. His work includes sound and video, and in between, tending a small garden.
Anita Roy is a well-known writer and critic, who works with Delhi-based publishing house Zubaan. The essay, ‘A Feeling For Earth’ that inspired this project (originally published in IQ magazine,) and other writings by her can be found on www.anitaroy.net. She is creative consultant for the Garden Underground project.
Dr Alka Pande is currently a Consultant Arts Advisor and Curator of the Visual Arts Gallery at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. She is also the artistic director for HABITAT PHOTOSPHERE festival.
