Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Science, Society and Nature’ series) on ‘The Fabric of Biological Science in the 21st Century: An Indian cell biologist’s perspective’ by Prof. Satyajit Mayor, National Centre for Biological Sciences,
Bengaluru.

Abstract:
With the increase in scientific activity globally, the geographical focus of basic research is shifting away from the West.  This geographical shift has a number of consequences, related to the locale in which biological science is growing. One of these destinations is India. At the same time, multidisciplinary approaches are uncovering new layers in our understanding of how cells and cellular systems work, defining a new language for biology. This is likely to alter the fabric of the biological sciences as we know it today. How these opportunities may be grasped in the Indian context to make science in India a globally competitive enterprise is an important issue. The speaker will explore some of these questions that the shift in the geography and language of the biological science raise. The talk will also address how some of these challenges may be addressed by taking specific examples of institutions and the research of people who have opened up new possibilities.

Speaker:
Prof. Satyajit Mayor studied Chemistry at IIT, Mumbai, and obtained his Ph.D. in Life Sciences from The Rockefeller University, New York. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Columbia University, New York. He has taken a multi-disciplinary approach combining cell biology with physics and chemistry to study the organization and trafficking of membrane molecules in living cells. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of Chemistry and EMBO.
