Fabulous geographies and sacred pasts in Kashmir’s historical tradition’ by Dr. Chitralekha Zutshi, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, USA.
Abstract:
This paper examines the unfolding of the twin definitions of place and history in Kashmir’s historical tradition across the centuries. It focuses primarily on Persian and Kashmiri historical narratives as well as some visual representations of Kashmir’s landscape to highlight the interconnections among multiple traditions and regions that went into the creation of the idea of Kashmir as an especially blessed landscape. At the same time, it highlights the multi-faceted nature of the idea of history and the historical project developed and set forth in these narratives.
Speaker:
Dr. Chitralekha Zutshi is Associate Professor of History at The College of William and Mary, and the author of Kashmir’s Contested Pasts: Narratives, Sacred Geographies, and the Historical Imagination and Languages of Belonging: Islam, Regional Identity, and the Making of Kashmir.
