Event Description : Gallerie Ganesha presents "Identity Proclaimed: Exploring the Persona" a group show of ‘Portraits’ by fourteen artists.

Shobha Bhatia, Director, Gallerie Ganesha presents a group show of portraits titled Identity Proclaimed: Exploring The Persona including portrait work in various mediums ranging from oil on canvas, acrylic on paper and watercolour on paper. This group show by fourteen prominent artists, such as Akbar Padamsee, Chippa Sudhakar, Ganesh Pyne, Jogen Choudhary, Kavita Deuskar, Manu Parekh, Neeraj Goswami, Mohan Singh, Paresh Maity, Samindranath Majumdar, Suhas Roy, Sunil Das, Thota Vaikuntham and Yashpal Chandrakar.

Says Shobha Bhatia, Director, Gallerie Ganesha: “In society, we begin with an idea of who we want to be and constantly work towards achieving that goal. It’s always about creating an identity. This exhibition is a tribute to the artist who creates identities at will in his paintings using his creative expression. Since he lives through his work, he can assume many different identities at different times creating a visual diversity which is a pleasure to behold.”

Delhi-based artist Neeraj Goswami likes to focus on the eyes in his work, which he believes are “a reflection of a person’s soul, and even his state of mind”.

Kolkata-based artist Samindranath Majumadar prefers to call his portraits “faces” while Delhi-based senior artist Manu Parekh believes that when he paints "heads", he creates a situation and an atmosphere.

Suhas Roy’s preoccupation is primarily with the female face and form, and his subjects are romanticised, inhabiting the dreamlike world between sensuality and innocence.

Akbar Padamsee is a contemporary Indian artist and painter, considered one of the pioneers in modern Indian painting who has worked with various mediums from oil painting, plastic emulsion, water colour, sculpture, printmaking and photography.

Primarily based on the intricate relationship patterns between men and women, Chippa Sudhakar’s paintings attempt to explore the nuances of these subtle links.

Ganesh Pyne was one of the most notable contemporary artists of the Bengal School of Art who had also developed his own style of ‘poetic surrealism’, fantasy and dark imagery, around the themes of Bengali folklore and mythology.

Jogen Chowdhury, who lives and works in Santiniketan, is known as a master of lines and has mastered to make the curves depict the character of his figures. By careful distortion of the form he imparts the air of caricature in his figures of men and women.

K.S.Kulkarni, chosen in 1984 by the Govt. of India as the National Emeritus Professor for outstanding contribution in the field of art, drew his inspiration from the folk and primitive art be it Egyption, Indian, Mexican, Incan etc. He could work entirely within the Indian tradition with as much ease and consummate skill as he could adapt the mores of some of the Western Masters.

Paresh Maity has gradually moved from atmospheric scenery to representations of the human form. His more recent paintings are bold and graphic, with a strong colour and unusual cropping.
