About the program : Juan Hidalgo is an indisputable leader in the Spanish music, especially of theatrical music. Author of the first two Spanish operas, with text by Calderon de la Barca, The Purple Rose (1659) and Jealousy air even kill (1660), Hidalgo was the favorite court musician Felipe IV. De Hidalgo liturgical compositions are preserved in Latin and vernacular religious compositions (carols and tones). Many of them are of a surprising lyricism and modernity.
