Event Description : Discussion and Readings
“I was writing furiously all through my childhood… I was just born that way: destined. One does not choose to become a writer. I started school at six and learnt the alphabet and then we were told to write our first composition. The subject : a hare-- in German der Hase. I wrote the title Der Hase. At once I was flooded with my destiny: only I didn’t know that’s what it was. I only remember my entire absorption, delight, in writing about—giving my impression of—Der Hase. To think such happiness could be!”
Her books have had high critical acclaim. C. P. Snow, Rumer Godden and V. S. Pritchett variously describing her work as "the highest art," "a balance between subtlety, humour and beauty" and as being “Chekhovian in its detached sense of comic self-delusion.”
The session will be moderated by Meera Dewan. There will be a short introduction to her life by daughter Renana Jhabvala and a short film interview with Ruth herself.
The mood will be set by Readings from Ruth’s work by Averee Choudhary and Minotti Chtterjee.
Author Aruna Chakravarty will introduce the fiction writings of Ms Jhabvala.
And celebrated Hindi Writer Ramesh Chandra Shah will give his interpretation of her last two books—My Nine Lives and Love Song for India.
