Event Description : The Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Spic Macay and Gallery Espace present "Thärichens Tentett" an evening of Jazz.
In 2014 Thärichen’s Tentett will be celebrating their fifteenth anniversary with a tour in South Asia! This performance also marks the closing of the exhibition ‘Drawing 2014: Seven Decades of Indian Drawing’ presented by Gallery Espace that celebrates their 25th anniversary.
Nicolai Thärichen, pianist, composer and arranger founded Thärichen’s Tentett in 1999 with the singer Michael Schiefel. This ten-piece-band performs Nicolai’s original compositions, mostly songs set on poems by artists like Dorothy Parker, Lord Byron, Thomas Hardy and Ronald D. Laing.
In the past fifteen years, the band has been lauded for delivering “the most felicitous compositions, the most polished arrangements, and the most humorous presentation of all larger German jazz groups” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Speaking about vocalist Michael Schiefel, the newspaper the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said, "Germany has perhaps never had such a jazz singer."
Since its formation, “the creme of Berlin's young Jazz scene” (Berliner Tagesspiegel) around Nicolai Thärichen has published four CD’s. Their debut, Lady Moon (2001) was labelled “excellent” (Jazzthing), “this year's most stunning German record” (Die Welt) and “the embodiment of 21st century jazz” (jazzlabel.de) by the critics. Tentett’s third CD, Grateful (2005) is dedicated to the Scottish psychiatrist Ronald D. Laing. It was released in November 2005 and received rave reviews.
Over the years, audiences have become more enthusiastic, spanning from the release of Tentett’s first album Lady Moon to their fifth record An Berliner Kinder (2011/2012) and from their first performance at the A-Trane (Berlin) in 1999 to their 2014 concerts in South Asia.
