The package is curated by the two curatorial teams – Anomaa Rajakaruna, Susanne Sachsse, Stefanie Schulte Strathaus, and Marc Siegel. The curatorial focus is on issues of identity and conflict with regards to the individual and the collective, groups and nations, memories and histories. Specifically, we will present films that – among other things – thematise the complexities of gender relations and ethnic diversity; the difficulties of coping with the ravages of war and disease; the political necessity of recovering family histories; and the challenges of identity categories that are imposed on individuals by society or the state. The films address these important issues through a variety of aesthetic and affective strategies, from more straightforward documentary or narrative modes to subtle comedy and expressive performance.
The seven short films in this programme exemplify this thematic and aesthetic diversity. Seminal German feminist filmmaker Helke Sander's first film, Subjektitüde, is a brief look at a woman's negotiations with gender relations while waiting at a bus stop. The subjective camera and the reflective and entertaining soundtrack both capture a woman's perspective on her surroundings. The Egyptian short film On a Monday suggests with touching simplicity and delightful storytelling how a married couple can rediscover their love for one another through a slight change in their daily routine. In the early 1970s, Macedonian cinematographer and filmmaker Karpo Godina travelled to the Vojvodina province of Serbia to make the witty and stunningly beautiful film Healthy People for Fun. This unusual documentary is a tribute to the region's tremendous ethnic, religious and cultural diversity, as well as a testimony to the dignity of these people and the aesthetic of their homes. Independent filmmaker Subasri Krishnan's documentary, This or That Particular Person, reflects on issues of personhood and citizenship in the context of the Unique Identification Number project introduced by the Indian state in 2009. Deirdre Logue's Per Se stages its investigation of difference within the intimacy of interpersonal relations. The last two films in the program will address issues specific to Sri Lanka and Iran. The 18th of May is the day before the Sri Lankan armed forces claimed victory over Tamil rebels. The film of the same name focuses on two lovers who try to kiss each over a table. The table becomes a barrier and their lips fail to meet. Instead of identifying the real physical barrier between them they choose to fight with an imaginary enemy and finally destroy him. But the table remains there. Relying entirely on archival footage, Blames and Flames focuses on the targeted
destruction of cinemas during the Iranian revolution of 1978 and thereby finishes the programme with a reflection on the centrality of cinema to questions of identity and conflict.
