Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Cities in History’ series) on ‘Urban Planning in Colonial India : Some themes and perspectives’ by Dr. Partho Datta, Zakir Husain Evening College, University of Delhi, Delhi.
Abstract : The planning of towns and cities has been explored sparsely by historians and if at all, then as an adjunct to the larger genre of urban history. This lecture will argue that planning deserves a more central place in the investigations of historians exploring the urban in colonial India. Other than the thematic concerns of planning which include the study of urban order in its various spatial and ideological forms, the history, archives and models of planning in colonial India will also be explored. From the late nineteenth century institutions like Improvement Trusts became important instruments for restructuring cities like Bombay and Calcutta and their impact highlights how debates on colonial rule, nationalism and modernity were crucial to the form of cities.
Speaker : Dr. Partho Datta teaches undergraduate history in Zakir Husain P.G. Evening College, University of Delhi, Delhi. He has been a Fellow at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and has published Planning the City: Urbanization and Reform in Calcutta c.1800-c.1940, Delhi, 2012.
