Satish Gujral - Solo Show at Chawla Art Gallery, Square One Mall, Saket > 11:00am - 7:00pm on till 28th February’2014
Time : 11:00 am - 7:00 pm (Monday Closed)
Event Description : Satish Gujral can rightly be described as a living legend. Painter, sculptor, muralist, architect & writer, the versatile artist is one of the few who has consistently dominated the art scene in India. He was born in Jhelum, Punjab, in 1925. Entombed in silence in his early years as a result of his hearing being impaired, he would draw and read Urdu literature, and in 1939 joined the Mayo School of Art in Lahore. In 1944 he joined the JJ School of Art in Bombay where he came into contact with the Progressive Artists Group (PAG). Unable to accept their European vocabulary or their techniques, he searched for a more traditional Indian modernism. In 1952, the artist went to study at Palacio Nationale de Belles Artes, Mexico.
The Belgium Government honored him with the “Order of The Crown” in 1983 for designing the Belgium Embassy in New Delhi. The only non-Belgium architect to win this distinction. In 1999, the artist was honored with the “Padma Vibhushan”, the second highest national award in India. He is also honored by Delhi & Punjab States, as well as by Shanti Niketan, with highest honor Desikottama” in 1998. He was honored by Mexico’s Da Vinci Foundation with its international award for “Lifetime Achievements”. The Mexican Government conferred Gujral with the “The Order of The Aztec Eagle” in recognition to his contribution to art & cultural relations between the two countries. In February 2006, in recognition of Gujral’s contribution to Indian art, the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, organized a Retrospective Exhibition of the senior artist.
