Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Seminar on ‘Certitudes of the Times: Rights for the wronged child’ by Prof. A. R. Vasavi, NMML.
Abstract: Certitudes denote and represent dominant legitimising narratives that seek to mark the lives of people. Since the late 1990s, some of the key certitudes of our times have been that of 'global economy', 'rights', 'quality', and 'inclusive growth'. Each of these have been central in directing and altering the lives of four emblematic figures; that is the agriculturist, the IT professional, the child and the school teacher. This lecture will focus on how the certitude of rights has been deployed to address a multitude of problems that the average child in India faces. Ranging from the new right to education (RTE) to the establishment of a range of institutions (eg NCPCR) and processes, the state and a number of civil society organisations seek to rescue and rehabilitate the child. Each of these highlight the conditions of the child in India and the tensions between the altering structural conditions and the forms of governmentality.
Speaker : Prof. A. R. Vasavi is currently a Senior Fellow at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. Her most recent book was, Shadow Space: Suicides And The Predicament Of Rural India. She is now working on a book on Indian society since 1997.
