Event Description : Aadyantara & Connecting Dreams Foundation Present 'Swayamdeepa' Hindi play.
In Mahabharata, the great epic of ancient India, by the order of gods, Kacch- son of King of gods-Varaspati, was send to learn "mritsanjeevni mantra"(a spell that had the power to bring back life to the dead) from Guru Shukracharya, Dharmaguru of the demons.
After Kacch rejects the marriage proposal of Devyani, daughter of Shukracharya, she curses him that he will be unable to use his knowledge of mritsanjeevni mantra. Anguished, Kacch curses Devyani of never marrying a God or a Brahmin, as a result of this curse by turn of events, Devyani marries Yayati, a king of human race. However, Yayati deceives Devyani and secretly marries Sharmishta, daughter of king Vrishparva. When Devyani learns of her husband’s infidelity she refuses to stay in his palace and returns heartbroken to her father’s ashram.
Swamdeepa revolves around the story of Devyani and through her medium reflects upon the condition of women in our society which has remained unchanged. It brings to light the dispassionate and selfish motives which make her vulnerable even in today’s times. It depicts how society is still biased to her and refuses to give her her dues for her contributions, accomplishments, and sacrifices.
The play Swayamdeepa attempts to raise these questions that are relevant today as it was years ago. Where will Devyani's destiny take her as she realizes her self worth?
