Event Description :‘The University : Transformations and the work of intellect’ public lecture by Prof. Nivedita Menon, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Abstract : The lecture will reflect on what counts as knowledge, on the production, transmission and subversion of knowledge, and recent transformations in the institution of the University as a centre of knowledge production and dissemination. How can we conceive of knowledge as critical thinking, which may not arrive at predictable or 'progressive' end-points? And what is the relationship between this kind of 'knowledge' and 'education'? What role can the university play in rethinking the very boundaries of what can count as knowledge, and still remain relevant? Relevant to whom or to what? Can irrelevance to the dominant world-view be a virtue?
Speaker : Prof. Nivedita Menon teaches at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Among her books are Recovering Subversion: Feminist Politics Beyond the Law (2004), Power and Contestation: India after 1989, co-written with Aditya Nigam (2007) and most recently, Seeing Like a Feminist (2013). An active commentator on the blog kafila.org, she has also translated fiction and non-fiction from Hindi and Malayalam into English. She has been active with citizens’ forums in Delhi around secularism, workers’ and women’s rights, sexuality, and in opposition to the nuclear bomb.
