Event Description : LILA-PRISM Lecture 6 'Richard Mahapatra - Reporting Globalisation from a Village Dateline' a talk by Richard Mahapatra
The Lecture: “Reporting Globalisation from a Village Dateline” discusses the origins and present difficulties of development journalism. Down To Earth started in 1992, a period coinciding with India’s economic liberalisation process. After 20 years, the media knowingly or unknowingly has been undergoing a change in its reporting approach. Development journalism faces an unique challenge. How has our reporting development issues changed at the time of economic liberalisation?
About the Speaker : Richard Mahapatra, a senior editor with Down To Earth magazine, has been reporting on development issues for the last 15 years. He has been writing on the linkages between environment and poverty. His reporting analyses discuss developments at village level in the wider context of national and global changes.
Moderator : Kaushik Dasgupta, Features Editor at Down To Earth magazine, will introduce the speaker and moderate the discussion. He is a student of history who studied at Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Kaushik writes on ecological history and has a keen interest in the history of food.
Background : LILA PRISM Lecture Series 2013 is an attempt to explore some major fields of knowledge in the developmental context of contemporary India. This initiative is already finding support and following in India and abroad. The 16 speakers, beyond rigorously discussing their specific topics, will share with us the dream of a society in which creative efforts and meaningful results are integrally connected. They will not only pose key questions that must awaken policy makers, but also share their suggestions to link their disciplinary sites with the lives of common people, in a non-intrusive and creative way.
