Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Science, Society and Nature’ series) on ‘Impending Battles: Science and Democracy’ by Prof. Shiv Visvanathan, O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat.

Abstract : This talk is a tentative attempt to explore the relation between science and democracy through a study of debates on science in two periods: first explores the relation between science, nationalism and society and the second, discusses some of the debates in the period after independence. I wish to emphasize the diversity of debates, and the metaphors and concepts provided for democracy. The examples range from Ananda Coomaraswamy’s work on dyes, Patrick Geddes notion of science and Tagore’s views on making of the university. The last part of the paper discusses the relation between science, energy and civil-society focusing on the work of C. V.  Seshadri. The examples are more to illustrate the possibility of such a study and to invite other scholars to explore the field.

Speaker : Prof. Shiv Visvanathan is currently Professor at the School of Government and Public Policy at the O. P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat. He writes regular columns for Asian Age, Times Mirror, Mail Today and several other online forums. He is the author of Organizing for Science and Carnival for Science and co-author of Foul Play: Chronicles of Corruption.
