Event Description : Film screenings as part of 'New, New German Cinema : Focus on Two Directors' Films by Andreas Dresen & Christian Petzold are as follows :
20th August : SUMMER IN BERLIN (Sommer vorm Balkon)
(110 min; 2005; DVD; English subtitles) Director: Andreas Dresen
A comedy of sorts, the film follows two friends through a summer of various triumphs and tribulations. At the heart of the film is the relationship between friends and neighbours Nike and Katrine. Nike's balcony is where the women spend their evenings drinking until events change things. At the beginning, middle or end of their lives - they ask the same question: Can love last through the seasons? Or is it something affecting the brain that just comes and goes.
21st August : YELLA
(89 min; 2007; DVD; English subtitles) Director: Christian Petzold
Boardroom drama? Supernatural thriller? Damning critique of German capitalism? Yella is all of these things and more, a slippery and haunting tale of Yella an East German migrant who flees her unhinged ex-husband to pursue an accountancy job in Hanover. What she discovers is a ruthless world of sharks in suits led by venture capitalist Phillipp. Hounded by her past and suffering strange episodes of déjà vu, she is adrift in a world that's quite literally soulless.
22nd August : CLOUD 9 (Wolke 9)
(98 min; 2008; DVD; English subtitles) Director: Andreas Dresen
Cloud 9 tells the story of a prudent sixty something housewife, Inge living in a dreary flat with her train-fancying partner of 30 years, Werner. Completely out of the blue, Inge falls head over heels in love with Karl, ten years her senior. Cloud 9 tells of an enclosed tragedy, one in which human contact is scarce and older people are expected to shuffle gracefully, sensibly and sexlessly to the grave.
Background : Over the past decade, German cinema has been revived with the emergence of a string of remarkable new filmmakers who have won international film awards, including four Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film with two films walking away with the Oscars. Beginning with Christian Petzold, Thomas Arslan and Angela Schanelec who in contrast to the more conventional efforts of Fatih Akin and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, have based their work in an emphasis on formal experimentation over spectacle and a preference for narrative experimentation over storytelling based on character psychology, whether transparent or ambiguous. As a group, these filmmakers are often referred to as "the Berlin School." Andreas Dresen working outside of this group is considered a trailblazer in New German Cinema with a reputation for being unique in his filmmaking approach. His idiosyncratic body of work, walking the fine line between reality and fiction, unafraid of dealing with social outcasts and exploring subjects buried deep in the margins of contemporary society.
