Event Description : DWIH Joint Lecture Series 2013. Humboldts Erben (Humboldt's Heirs)
Lecture
Taking up the DWIH’s Motto of “Germany Land of Ideas”, this Joint Lecture Series aims at paying tribute to the different facets of Alexander von Humboldt’s academic achievements. The German House for Science and Innovation (Deutsches Haus für Wissenschaft und Innovation, DWIH) is a consortium of about twenty members for strengthening academic exchange between Indian and Germany. Heidelberg Center South Asia (HCSA) has initiated this Lecture Series, jointly with the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). By doing so, we aim at bringing together scholars from the fields of Natural and Social Sciences, as well as Humanities and Literature.
The Lecture Series will be held over the next few months, with prominent scholars from India and Germany.
The Idea of a Humboldtian Science
The nineteenth century witnessed the elaboration of several scientific projects as newer disciplines emerged and several older ones were re-arranged and assembled within well defined disciplinary formats. The contested field of this differentiation was not merely around the objects of scientific investigation but naturally around theories of knowledge as well. Against this backdrop this talk chronicles Alexander von Humboldt's attempt to construct a comprehensive science that later days thinkers labelled Humboldtian science.
