Abstract : In the paper I propose to explore the rationale in favour of a democratic secular law governed statist order advanced by figures such as B R Ambedkar, who played a key role in designing the Indian Constitution. Ambedkar’s critique of caste power and endorsement of a free, communicative and associative social order raises questions about the extent to which ideas of “nation” percolated into his recommendations in favour of the instrumentalities of the law and state. The aim of the aforementioned exploration is to interrogate the possibility of analytically bifurcating discourses about the “state” from those of the “nation,” and to call thereby into question the facility with which a framework of politics associated with the hyphenated entity “nation-state” (explored critically in the work of scholars such as Partha Chatterjee) can be employed to understand appropriately the distinctive logic underlying the choice of liberal democratic political institutions for independent India.
Speaker : Dr. Rinku Lamba is Assistant Professor at the Centre for Political Studies in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She is a political theorist with an interest in the doctrines of secularism, multiculturalism and nationalism. She is also very interested in modern Indian political thought and is currently working on a book-length project to outline the main contours of an Indian variant of liberalism.
