Abstract : This paper seeks to explore the foundations of contemporary dalit discourse that has shaped the contours of bahujan politics in the state of Uttar Pradesh in the last 25 years. Kanshiram’s impress on the BSP’S dalit ideology that had set out to resurrect a failed dalitist project in north India in the 1980s is set in an ideological context of reversing the subjugated condition of dalit-bahujans through ‘social transformation’ as an ultimate goal of replacing upper caste leadership by a predominantly dalit leadership. Critique of upper caste governing elite, fragmented dalit political parties and the complaisant nature of dalit elites anchor the new dalit ideology. Over the last two decades BSP has consistently negotiated a changing socio-political context in the state to give primacy to the political role of caste to conceptualize in new ways dalit politics and their mobilisation by a dalit political leadership, both authoritatively composed, for a political struggle.
