Alliance Française de Delhi is proud to present the second session of the 2012 Water Series, a series of events around the problem of water in India and in the world. This round table is entitled Water for All / All for Water and will gather many specialists to approach in depth the issue of the access to potable water.
Indeed the inaccessibility to potable water is still a main issue for humanity. Every minute, 15 people die because of diseases transmitted by contaminated water. Thousands of children die every day from diarrheal diseases and other ones transmitted by water or caused by poor hygienic conditions.
UNICEF has set itself the challenge of halving the number of people who don’t have an access to safe water until the year 2015 as one of its development goals for the millennium. According to a report entitled “Progress on drinking water and sanitation 2012”, published by UNICEF and WHO, this mission has already been a success. Indeed, between 1990 and 2010, potable water has become accessible to more than 2 billions of people.
Nevertheless, 783 millions of people (11% of world population) still can’t access to potable water, and billions are deprived of sanitation. One of the main ongoing issues is also the lack of sanitization of water. In rural areas of LDCs, 97% people lack access to safe piped water and 14% of these populations drink water on surface, coming from rivers, ponds or lakes.
According to the Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki-Moon: “We achieved an important objective, but we can’t stop here. The next step should be to target those who are the most difficult to reach, the poorest and most disadvantaged people. Access to safe water and sanitation is a fundamental right. That means we need to ensure that everyone has access to it.”
All the series of events is organized in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre,
Veolia Water and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
