Event Details : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture on 'Ramana Maharshi's battle with Cancer' by Prof. Susan Visvanathan, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
Abstract : The talk is drawn from my book "The Children of Nature:The Life and Legacy of Ramana Maharshi" (Roli 2010) It attempts to look at Ramana's response to his own illness, as recorded by devotees, and available through published accounts. A copy of this book has recently been gifted by me to the NMML Library.
Speaker : Professor Susan Visvanathan was Senior Lecturer and Teacher Incharge at Hindu College, Delhi University, till 1997. She then joined Jawaharlal Nehru University, where she teaches Classical Theory, Methodology and Sociology of Religion. She is the author of ten books which include “The Christians of Kerala: History, Belief and Ritual among the Yakoba”, 1993 and “The Children of Nature: The Life and Legacy of Ramana Maharshi”, 2010. Her book “Friendship Interiority and Mysticism” (2007) is composed of the collection of essays which she wrote and published as Occasional Papers of NMML and IIAS. She has been Fellow, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, (1989) and Honorary Fellow, Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla (1992). Susan Visvanathan has been Visiting Professor to Maison des Sciences de L’Homme, Paris, (2004) and also to Universite Paris 13 (2011) and Guest Faculty to Freie University, Berlin (2011). She was Charles Wallace Fellow to Queen’s University at Belfast in 1997. Prof Visvanathan was Chairperson of Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences JNU from 2009 to 2011. Two new books by her are to be released in 2012, namely Nelycynda and Other Stories (2012, forthcoming) and “Reading Marx,Weber and Durkheim Today" (in press).
