Abstract : This presentation discusses some results of recent archaeological and environmental research into the historic landscapes of southern India. Specifically, I focus on the region around the great Medieval city of Vijayanagara and the ways in which residents of this areas transformed agricultural and natural landscapes in ways still relevant to local people. Using the expansion of rice agriculture and the development of elite rice-based cuisines as a framework, we can see how both the semi-arid interior regions and the more humid Ghat uplands were drawn into networks of exchange that had far-reaching consequences. The present-day rural landscapes of southern India are products of this long history; looking at this long-term record, we find that human land use had variable effects and that past residents sometimes improved and sometimes degraded their local environments. In a world in which environmental crises are many and pressing, it can be helpful to consider that those who came before us also faced many of the same problems, and that they also experienced both success and failure.
Speaker : Prof. Morrison is Professor of Anthropology and Director, Center for International Studies, University of Chicago, U.S.A.
