1:00 pm - 2:30 pm - Using Songs and Chants with Young Learners
By Sarah Anderson, Senior English Language Fellow, U.S. Department of State
Not only are songs and chants fun and motivating for young learners, they also can improve listening and speaking skills. In addition, they can be used to work on the sound system of English, as well as help to develop an ear for the correct stress and intonation patterns. This workshop will introduce ways to use songs and chants in the primary classroom, and it will actively engage primary teachers as they design and practice activities that they can take back to their classrooms.
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm - Teaching Writing
By Sarah Anderson, Senior English Language Fellow, U.S. Department of State
To become effective writers, students must coordinate a broad range of complex skills, including clarity of thought and expression, and the ability to use conventional spelling, grammar, and punctuation (Peregoy and Boyle). This workshop will help teachers to become aware of the different skills used in writing. In addition, it will introduce strategies and techniques of teaching writing with a student-centered approach, and will show teachers how to break down the writing act into manageable parts for students. Lastly, teachers will also learn procedures for assessing student writing.
