Event Details : The prized Musical Instruments Gallery packing rare 17th century instruments is all set for re-opening in a new- look National Museum tomorrow (December 18) to a performance by Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan.
As the National Museum, the treasure trove of India’s cultural heritage, is celebrating the 50th Establishment Day, the occasion will also witness the commissioning of the first phase of its ongoing renovation, new initiatives like a travelling exhibition, outreach programmes for students, and announcement of a cultural encyclopaedia project.
The Museum has a large collection of musical instruments, both folk and classical. The collection was donated Mrs. Saran Rani Backliwal in 1980 and 1987. Most of the Indian instruments belong to the period between the 17th and19th centuries. There are also a few 19th century Western instruments. The objects have been divided into different categories like String instruments (veena, sitar, santoor), Percussion instruments (tabla, dholak) and Wind instruments (flute, trumpet). There are 125 musical instruments on display.
Amjad Ali Khan will play Sarod to mark the reopening of the Musical Instruments Gallery. Moreover, the music lovers in the National Capital can relish the class of the Sarod samrat with a full recital by him.
