"City" an experimental dance performance by Ashavari Majumdar at Max Mueller Bhavan, 3 Kasturba Gandhi Marg > 7pm on 29th October 2010
Time : 7:00 pm
Entry : Free
Event Details : Space is usually perceived or conceptualized as a static entity. Ashavari Majumdar’s work, tentatively titled ‘City’, is an experimental dance performance that challenges the static conception of space.
The Sarai-CSDS (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies) residency programme asked artists from various backgrounds - architecture filmmaking, design etc - to respond to the ‘City as Studio’. Ashavari’s work questions notions of the oppositions between ‘the city’ and ‘the studio’ as exclusive entities - positing a dance piece that evolves from gestures employed by the people visible on city streets and the soundscape of the Indian city.
The formal questions being asked are: what makes any movement a ‘dance’ movement? What are the possible intersections between these movements and a form like Kathak? What are the diverse, multiple meanings of ‘space’?
This project received a huge impetus from Sarai-CSDS and its 7-week long studio-residency programme. It allowed this dance piece to grow in many dimensions and facilitated collaborative efforts that have been part of its process.
Ashavari Majumdar has performed and taught Kathak in both national and international venues. She has been empanelled by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Ministry of Culture, as a soloist. She has also scripted and directed short films on dance and the environment.
