MUSIC CONCERT by Abhyas Trust "In The Spirit Of Abhyas" Against the Killings of Stray Dogs in Karnataka - 24th April, 2007

  • Time : 7:30 pm
  • Event Info : MUSIC ‘In The Spirit Of Abhyas’ a coming together of the North and the South. Abhyas Trust presents a joint concert of Punjabi Sufi singer Rekha Raj and Carnatic Singer Govindrajan Elangovan. An "In the Spirit of Abhyas Concert" Against the Killings of Stray Dogs in Karnataka. The idea of bringing these diverse musical forms together is to understand, appreciate and experience the free flow between these distinct forms from the North and the South, allowing them to swing back and forth without necessarily colliding or fusing into each other, and opening a vital space free of classical/folk, high-art/low-art divisions. Both musicians hail from music families thus their training has been both formal as well as through osmosis. Govindarajan Elangovan had his initial training in Carnatic music from his late father, Guru K.J. Govindrajan; and later studied with several eminent gurus such as Sri Shankaranarayan and Sri T. K. Govindrao. Apart from being a versatile singer, he is also a composer, a nattuvanaar and a Tamil expert. Rekha Raj initially trained under her mother and grandmother, Pushpa Rani (who came from pre-partition Lahore), and later under the famous singer Shubha Mudhal. Today Rekha is one of the top Punjabi singers and has sung for the soundtrack of Monsoon Wedding and Khamosh Pani. Both Rekha and Elangovan are widely traveled and have enthralled audiences all over the world.
