Event Description : EXHIBITION "Hindu Deities Worshiped in Japan" solo photography show By Benoy K Behl

The Director of the Japan Foundation very kindly says that the exhibition and film on 'Hindu Deities Worshipped in Japan' has taken Indo-Japan relations on to a new plane altogether. You may also feel that it is a game-changer in the diplomatic relations.

This exhibition is being held by the Japan Foundation at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum as part of the Indo-Japan Year of Friendly Exchanges 2017.

Most people are not aware that numerous Hindu deities are very actively worshiped in Japan. In fact, there are hundreds of shrines to Saraswati alone. There are innumerable representations of Lakshmi, Indra, Brahma, Ganesha, Garuda and other deities. In fact, deities we have practically forgotten in India, such as Vayu and Varuna are still worshiped in Japan.

In 1,200 temples in Japan ‘homa’ (goma in Japan) is performed every day, along with Sanskrit chanting. In many ways, I find that Japan has preserved ancient Hindu traditions, even when they may have changed here in India.

Most of the photographs in the exhibition ‘Hindu Deities Worshipped in Japan’ were taken by Benoy with the support of a Japan Foundation Fellowship.
