Event Description : With great pleasure we would like to inform you about a workshop  with Kathak Maestro Guru Shri Munna Shukla ji, titled ‘Nayika-bhed’

Kathak Maestro Guru Shri Munna Shukla ji is a dancer of a rare lyrical grace, a most refined choreographer and a teacher of immense knowledge of Indian tradition and ancient texts. His pedagogical style reminds us that classical dance and music in India have for centuries been a spiritual practice, not just a matter of aesthetics.

Today, Guru Munna Shukla ji is recognized as one of the few torch-bearers of Kathak, who has not compromised with the subtlety of the nuances that are characteristic of the Lucknow style of Kathak. In an age where Kathak has come to be characterized by multiple Chakkars and fast footwork, his work holds the simple disguised appeal of Kathak-Vaachan (the art of story-telling).

About the workshop : The subject of 'Nayika-bhed', holds much importance to a classical dancer belonging to any genere of Indian classical dance ; but to unravel and interpret its deeper layers needs guidance and reference of revered masters of art. This special workshop organized by Sarsawati Music College and conducted by Guru Shri Munna Shukla, deals with one of the salient features of Indian classical dance. We are blessed, as Guru ji talks about the rich legacy of thumris that  his forefathers have handed down over the generations.

These organically designed sessions will be interspersed with lecture-demonstrations, rare video and audio clippings through which he illustrates the finer nuances of the topic. Needless to say that all the sessions during the workshop will consist of theoretical and the practical aspects dealing with the subject .
The workshop will be especially insightful for students looking to understand the deeper and subtler aspects of the dance form and to understand what it is to impart an age old art form to the younger generation, while retaining the sanctity of the art, yet remaining relevant to the world today.

The workshop culminates with a presentation by the participants.
