Event Description : DANCE : Meera & Durga ballets as part of Summer Ballet Festival 2017

Says Shobha Deepak Singh, Director Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra (SBKK) and festival director: “I wanted to re-interpet these age-old stories in a way which is relevant to our society today. Each character symbolizes the dilemmas and traumas of modern-day society, each woman defies the male order and each demon (mahishasur) that lurks in every corner is slayed by strong powerful women who are independent and self-sufficient."

5th May : Meera is one of the greatest saint poetesses of our country.

Her glory lies in her ability to articulate through her poetry the turbulence that transpired in her life – almost in an autobiographical way. It is because Meera’s life seems to be an allegory for most women, and centuries later Meera’s name lives on. She posed a challenge to the feudal order and that challenge is as prevalent today as it was during her life. However, while most of her popular songs/bhajans are in Hindi, the ballet uses only bhajans in Mewari, the language that Meera had written in. Played by Molina Singh, a well-known Odissi and Kathak dancer of the Jaipur Gharana, Meera shows she exists in every woman who is free to make her own choices - her dancing and singing symbolizing female abandon. So, Meera travels on, embracing her liberties and inspiring others.

6th May : In the ballet Durga, played by Shiburam Mohant, an evocative scene captures the true power of a woman.

Mahishasur was granted the boon that he would be invincible to all opponents except a woman. The gods offered their fire, their potency, and their weapons jointly to Durga. Because Durga was unprotected by a male deity, Mahishasur assumed that she would be helpless; for that is the way women are generally portrayed. Having conquered Mahishasur, Durga (iun her avatar as Kali) is faced with Raktabeej whose drops of blood form seeds for the instant birth of similar demons. But the Goddess laughs. She loves war and she loves challenges. Kali drinks up the demon’s blood before even a drop of it falls to the ground. When Raktabeej hits out at her, Kali shoots at him – her bloodshot eyes rolling up in drunken ecstasy. The demon collapses and dies and the Goddess now breaks into a dance of victory. She is unstoppable until Shiva himself lies down on the path of her dance and as she unwittingly puts her foot on Him, her intoxication is stemmed.
