FICA Presents "Critical Unfoldings: Reconfiguring Spaces of Art and Pedagogy at the Students' Biennale in Kochi" Presentation by Rakhee Balaram
With Shukla Sawant as Discussant 

In preparation for the recently concluded Students' Biennale, organised as part of the Kochi Muziris Biennale 2016, a number of student workshops were held. Through research with curators and organizers, Rakhee Balaram proposes models to think about the theoretical departures offered by such student initiatives and how they might interface with other experimental practices taking place in India and around the world.   

Rakhee Balaram is Assistant Professor of Global Art & Art History at University at Albany, State University of New York.  In 2015-16, she was an Art Histories fellow, an initiative of the Kunsthistorisches Institut, Florence, and the Max-Planck-Institut in Berlin, Germany. She has previously taught the history of art at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and at the University of Warwick. She is currently working on two book-length projects, 'Decolonizing the Modern: Amrita Sher-Gil', 'Rabindranath Tagore and the Global Avant-Garde and Counterpractice: Psychoanalysis, Politics and the Art of French Feminism' (forthcoming, Manchester University Press). She is co-editor, along with Partha Mitter and Parul Dave-Mukherji, of a comprehensive survey of modern and contemporary Indian art, '20th-Century Indian Art' (forthcoming, Skira). Balaram holds double doctorates in French Literature from Cambridge University and the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London.

Shukla Sawant is a visual artist and professor of visual studies, School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where she has taught since 2001. She is also currently visiting faculty at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai.  Prior to joining JNU, Shukla Sawant taught for twelve years at the Department of Fine Arts and Art Education Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi. She is a recipient of the  Commonwealth scholarship and  her research interests include modern and contemporary art, photography, printmaking and  new media. She is a founder member of the Indian Printmakers’ Guild and was a working group member of Khoj International Artists’ Association between 1998-2005.
