Event Description :
DANCE & MUSIC : Lok Chhanda presents “Nritya Katha – an evening of choreographic works”, in association with India Habitat Centre to present different colours of dance style, modelled in Kathak, Chhau & Contemporary.

Karna in Kathak style by Rita Mustaphi & Katha Dance Theatre Minneapolis (USA) with live drums; Nayak in Mayurbhanj Chhau style by Rakesh Sai Babu & Gurukul Chhau Academy Delhi; Kabeera in Kathak style by Maitreyee Pahari & Lok Chhanda Cultural Unit Delhi

Katha Dance Theatre tries to bring in a trail of Indian Kathak from the American soil, the vision was conceptualised by Rita Mustaphi, a disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj. The artists also hail from the United States to spread the magic of their performance through dance and music. The dance troupe has been globetrotting and presenting their wonderful art forms on a global platform.

Dance performances to scintillate the event are as follows –

Nayak – to be performed by Rakesh Sai Babu, who is a choreographer and disciple of Guru Janmejoy Sai Babu. He is also an artistic director at Gurukul Chhau Dance Sangam. He will perform in the famous Mayurbhanj Chhau Style.

Kabeer – by Maitreyee Pahari to grace the event with her pure Kathak Style in a contemporary presentation. The music is by the famous band – Mrigya, Sharat Chandra Srivastava is the music composer.

Karna – to be portrayed by Rita Mustaphi in Kathak Style, is a rework of the famous epic, where tradition and modernity are at play in the conflicting relationships between a queen, her secret son, a strong-willed princess and the God that made him a legend. The ground-breaking collaborative project also features Katha Dance Theatre Company members, Anurag Sharma, Rita Mustaphi and Derek Phillips. It will also be working with local Kathak dancers and live drummers to accompany them in touring.

Chains – to be presented by Nanda Kumar, in an upbeat contemporary style that depicts slavery that existed throughout history, in many times and most places. A combination of lives of slaves in which individuals are owned by others, who control where they live and how they work.  The dance piece depicts emotions, sufferings of slaves and thirst for freedom, having no escape route. It reflects the holistic thought that encompasses all aspects of slavery.
Nanda Kumar joined Sadhya (a unit of Performing arts) in the year 2009 as a student. Trained in contemporary dance form and Mayurbhanj Chhau under Santosh Nair. Coming from a background of Funk Jazz, he moulds himself quite nicely in to the contemporary dance style.
