Event Description : TALK
'Before the Monsoon: the Architecture of Charles Correa'

Charles Correa' s architecture is characterised by a sense of urgency about his own work. It has grown from a body of underlying concepts that, while evolutionary, have not altered in their substance: His experience of spaces as dynamic energy fields in which we engage has shaped his own 'promenade architecturale.' His great inventiveness has stemmed from a keen consciousness of the interaction between climate, culture and people.

Rooted in India, but with education inflected by his experience in the West, Correa concentrated on the living patterns in communities where he worked, achieving remarkable results with simple but effective means.

He saw no barrier between tradition and modernity, nor did he see them as opposites. Always contemporary, he subtly layered the history of the land with his own original ideas in his designs. His sources range from the railway models of his childhood to conceptions of the cosmos and the street-hawkers' use of the Mumbai pavements.

Throughout his career, he demonstrated a remarkably consistent approach, guided by a respect for the given conditions, a desire to effect change without forced interference and a passion to combine fitness for purpose with beauty and spirituality.

The lecture by Dr Murray will illustrate some of Correa's 'classic' and recent projects with a view to his legacy as an architect and humanist.

Note: The Talk Will Be Followed By A Screening Of A Short Documentary: Howard Hodgkin In India, In The Presence Of The British Artist. Sir Howard Hodgkin Was Greatly Inspired By The Work Of Charles Correa.
