Event Description :
"StreetBeats" A photography show by Ahmed Firoz and Shoba Jolly

"The question is not what you look at but what you see." -  Henry David Thoreau

Two distinguished and talented photographers, Ahmed Firoz and Shoba Jolly, attempt to reveal a plethora of intriguing secrets, as the street surrenders itself to their ‘Art of Seeing’ through their photography exhibition ‘StreetBeats’
. They love to capture poignant moments, expressions of the common man and various interesting facets of life on the streets, revealed beautifully through their roving lenses.

There’s a decisive moment with street photography, ‘Blink’ and you will miss it, but that is not the case with  Firoz and Shoba , two voraciously talented lens-persons. Both of them have a distinct world view, and understanding of the rapidly changing world, and photography helps them in putting their perspectives together. Through their exhibition ‘StreetBeats’, Firoz  and Shoba have captured the various hues of life on streets from all over the world. The colours, flavors and a slice of life come alive with their intuitive compositions like one would experience with Shoba’s capture of a couple enjoying a private moment by the window and a candid shot of commuters in a public transport in an another time by Firoz.

Speaking about the show, Firoz says that, “The life on street is ever changing, dynamic, transient, and ephemeral, all at the same time, like a whiff of smoke curling upwards only to disappear forever. Amongst this chaos and clutter, and the comings and the goings, a busy street paints a true character of a nation, of the struggles of its citizens, of the onlookers or the energy of its workforce. I have captured all this through my lenses and put it up together for the show”

The narrative in the group show captures vividly the expressions on the faces of people and their reactions to the world around them. Sometimes seen, sometimes unseen, the photographs capture a colourful mosaic of happiness, anxiety, love, sadness and enthusiasm of the times we are living in. “As an observer of Life, while walking down a street, I try to get glimpses of the soul of the common man, like stolen glances between lovers or a child playing with a ragged doll. The graffiti on the walls echo the voices of people, which lay bare their pain, anger and desperation and that is another element that I look forward to capturing”, Shoba says, about her works.

An expressionist by style, Firoz through his lenses observes the unusual perspectives, which bring out the intricate relationship between people and the surroundings. His keen eye captures the delicate interplay of light, shadows and objects and is able to build intense stories around them, subtly. A student of Economics, Firoz did his MA, M.Phil and Ph.D. from the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
