Event Description : Tulika Kedia, Director The Kanha Museum of Life and Arts Presents "Chronicles From Rajasthan: Art of The Jogis" a special exhibition.
The exhibition presents a rich array of works drawn from the personal collection of Tulika Kedia and the book Contemporary Expressions Art of the Jogi, authored by Ms. Kedia herself. The book was launched at the recently concluded Jaipur Literature Festival, by the Chief Minister of Rajasthan Mrs. Vasundhara Raje Scindia.
Drawings and paintings by folk and tribal artists are the hidden treasures of Indian art. With this exhibition, Tulika Kedia has curated a remarkable visual feast which offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of village India as it comes to terms with the twenty-first century. One such glorious example is that of the extraordinary Jogi family comprising of wandering minstrels who narrated stories through music and dance. Faced with hardships and encouraged to try their hand at drawing, a new and totally original art form emerged which wove tales of the village and the city, of gods and goddesses, mythology and modernity. They were still storytellers but in a different way.
Deeply sensitive to the problems and possibilities these endangered artists face, Tulika shares, “The first time when I saw the art of the Jogi's, I was completely enraptured by the contemporary expression and simplicity in their style of painting. I decided that the world should see this fabulous art form and thus Must Art Gallery started showcasing their works.” She continues, “In the last couple of decades, as I began collecting Indian art, little did I realise that I was developing a passion that would ultimately consume me completely. Our indigenous art forms have myriad tales to tell, their colours evoke multiple emotions and their diversity is absolutely breath-taking.”
The book, Contemporary Expressions Art of the Jogi, authored by her is an amalgamation of brilliantly painted black and white works by the Jogi Family. It is a serious attempt to bring international visibility to the beauty of this little known art practice and is the first richly illustrated book of the art of the Jogi family.
Indiabeing an enormously rich, wealthy and culturally diverse country has more than six hundred tribes spread within the 29 states and 7 union territories. Tehu Behan and her husband Ganesh Jogi were first brought into the domain of contemporaryIndian art practice by the champion of folk and rural art, the artist ,anthropologist , Haku Shah, in the 1980’s.
Over the last four decades Ganesh and Teju Jogi and their six children developed and built their language into a formal structure. A fervent collector and passionate advocate of indigenous art, Tulika Kedia has puttogether a book with a great deal of dedication andcommitment to the promotion and dissemination of this little known art practice.
An absolute must for anyone who is curious about their life, community and the very essence of what is Jogi Art.
