Event Description : An Evening with Pradeep K. Chintagunta and Richard H. Thaler, Moderated by Jerry Rao.
This event is part of Chicago Booth's Global Leadership Series.

Richard H. Thaler is the Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics at Chicago Booth.  He will discuss his book Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics, which builds on his career of research "studying the radical notion that the central agents in the economy are humans—predictable, error-prone individuals."   Thaler is the director of the Center for Decision Research, and is the co-director (with Robert Shiller) of the Behavioral Economics Project at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He attended Case Western Reserve University where he received a bachelor's degree in 1967. Soon after, he attended the University of Rochester where he received a master's degree in 1970 and a PhD in 1974. He joined the Chicago Booth faculty in 1995.

Pradeep K. Chintagunta is the Joseph T. and Bernice S. Lewis Distinguished Service Professor of Marketing at Chicago Booth.  He will speak about his research on leveraging patients’ social networks to overcome tuberculosis under-detection in India.  "A lot of my early research was with scanner panel data trying to understand how consumers respond to different marketing activities of firms - prices, promotions, advertising, etc.," explains Chintagunta. "My research has expanded in two directions - one was to expand the domain beyond CPG products to pharmaceuticals and technology products and the other was to go beyond the consumer to other players in the broader 'ecosystem' to obtain a more holistic view of the effects of marketing."  Chintagunta earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Banaras Hindu University in 1984, a postgraduate diploma in management from the Indian Institute of Management in 1986, and a PhD in marketing from Northwestern University in 1990. In addition to teaching at Chicago Booth, he has taught courses at the Harvard Business School and the S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. He joined the Chicago Booth faculty in 1995.

Jaithirth (Jerry) Rao served in Citicorp's consumer banking operations in India, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the United Kingdom for nearly 20 years.  In 1998, he co-founded the software company MphasiS and merged with an Indian firm in 2000.  The new firm, MphasiS BFL, became the sixth largest software company in India in seven years.  The 2006 Distinguished Entrepreneurial Alumni Award winner sits on the boards of several companies and not for profits, including the University of Chicago Booth Global Advisory Board.  He is also a regular columnist for the Indian Express and has published several books.
