Amidst the ongoing commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) on April 2, 2015, Center for Child and Adolescent Well Being (CCAW), New Delhi, is geared up to lead several awareness-raising actions for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the city.

Disorders of the brain or mind are less understood in Indian society and often paid inappropriate attention. Many times these concerns are brushed under the carpet and superficially tagged as a thought in futility. Autism Spectrum Disorder (also referred to as Autism) is one such disorders that still awaits its share of due attention from our society. Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are often characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal as well as non-verbal communication and repetitive behaviors usually in varying degrees. Dr. Deepak Gupta, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist & founder of Centre for Child and Adolescent Well (CCAW) says, "Every child with ASD is unique in his or her own way, an attitude that our society has to understand, acknowledge and appreciate." In developing nations like India, it is difficult to even find medical & other tests for diagnosis, let alone having accessible information on the problem. In lack of basic information, where even recognition ASD gets challenging, there arises a prime need for raising awareness of ASD to the cognizance of masses. Dr. Gupta has been into the profession for more than 17 years and mentions that out of all patients he sees, the ASD cases have witnessed a sharp rise in the recent times. Due to this reason, there must be enough awareness campaigns educating people about ASD, its early recognition and ways to deal with it.
"ASD is often treated with extreme social disapproval. It gets difficult for us to try and make the other person understand the condition of our child," says a parent of child undergoing treatment for ASD. He adds that lack of proper awareness makes it emotionally taxing to explain the condition to his acquaintances. "Some people with Autism Spectrum Disorder have been found with great levels of intelligence and the condition is often intermingled with intellectual disability. Both terms are different from each other. Autism is that harsh barrier, which inhibits a person from expressing themselves fully and hence the complication and stigma," says Shreya Tandon, an associate psychologist working with children with ASD at CCAW.

In a bid to spread awareness and usher a new wave of vibrancy in how Autism is understood, Centre of Child and Adolescent Well Being (CCAW) is geared up to present the 3rd annual Autism Carnival: Celebrate Autism. We aim to inculcate new perspectives, which are far removed from medical jargon or formal medical conferences and are more understandable to general public. The event will be full of fun, frolic and diverse educational activities. Some of the activities include special talent shows, art and craft, games, and much more. Stalls of treatments like special education, speech and language therapies along with occupational therapy will be on demonstration/ display to highlight the significant developments. Celebrate Autism is not only a moment of excitement for children, but for parents and general public as well. Pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, students and researchers in the field of Autism will be gathering to reach a new milestone in changing the way Autism is understood in this country. Executing through innovative channels of awareness, Autism Carnival will open an expert panel for a live discussion and for visitors. The second series of Autism and Beyond, a unique parent information book will be launched on the occasion. Artistic and creative side of children under ASD will be on display through mesmerizing paintings and artworks made by them.

Exhausting the last bit of this fortunate day, the cause will be furthered by eminent names from the fashion arena. Shantanu and Nikhil, noted names in fashion industry are scheduled to join in for inauguration and prize distribution ceremony of a special talent show for kids under ASD.
