Event Description : Arts of The Earth presents "Indigenous Creativity-IV" an exhibition of folk and tribal arts of India.

Folk and tribal arts in India have long been undermined as a serious art form and dismissed as a craft tradition.  But the fact is that the indigenous artists of these genre are highly skilled in their craft and vividly bring to life pages from India’s rich cultural past stemming from the ritualistic every day life and social practices prevailing in their surroundings.  This art tradition is an important visual documentation of India’s cultural heritage.
Unfortunately, lack of patronage has forced these artists to abandon their art and look for alternative means of livelihood. Soon most of these age old art practices will be a thing of the past, only to be viewed in museums.  Arts of the Earth, an exclusive gallery on folk and tribal art forms of India and the only one of its kind in Delhi, was started with the objective of reviving and popularizing these art practices by showcasing them in and outside the gallery. It is our aim to draw these artists out of obscurity and into the limelight, and to eventually change the perception of the viewer in regarding their art form to be more than a craft practice. We hope through our exhibitions, to bring this art form to be on an equal footing with mainstream art.

Arts of the Earth exhibited its first exhibition outside the gallery space titled “Indigenous Creativity” at the Open Palm Court, Habitat Centre, New Delhi, in November 2011 , followed by “Indigenous Creativity II” at the same venue, commencing 14

th to 18th January, 2012 and “Indigenous Creativity III”, from 3rd till 30th August 2012. Now, we present “Indigenous Creativity IV”, from 12th April till 17th April 2015. As in the previous three shows, the works comprise of artworks from different states of India, and the styles are as varied as Madhubani from Bihar,  Mural from Kerala, Scrolls from Bengal as well as the Santhal regions, Gond from Madhya Pradesh, Warli from Maharashtra, Kalighat from Bengal, Patachitra from Orissa, Cheriyal from Andhra Pradesh, Pichwai from Rajasthan etc. Other than the paintings, there are some of the masters sculptures are in the display.
