Event Description : "Parting Gestures” a play by Paloma

About the play: Parting Gestures by Paloma Pedrero offers three artfully crafted character studies which highlight some of the oldest and most familiar traits in human relationships - the struggle for power and control, the depths of cruelty and the paradox of loving and hating at the same time. Set in fiercely modern situations and language, Pedrero’s characters show the many faces of lovers everywhere - the controller, the controlled, the deceiver and the deceived. Underneath, Pedrero is dealing with issues of gender and identity. In these romances and conflicts between men and women, she invites us to question and view what exactly gender means, how much is socially constructed and how much is inherent - all in a refreshing new light.

The Color of August: Two women artists who have been friends since childhood, are reunited after an eight-year separation. Maria has triumphed in Laura's absence, but Laura proves to be the stronger of the two in their artistic and personal rivalries.

A Night Divided: Sabina, an actress, feels abandoned by her French lover. As she gets increasingly drunk, she feels herself more and more attracted to Alberto, a Bible salesman, who casts aside that role as he succumbs to Sabina's charms.

The Voucher: Marta has left her husband, Gonzalo, and the two squabble over custody of their dog. Marta tricks Gonzalo into revealing that he would rather the dog die than have Marta keep her.

About the playwright : Spanish playwright Paloma Pedrero studied Sociology at Madrid's Universidad Complutense before becoming involved in the reestablishment of Madrid's theater scene following the death of Franco as a member of the Cachivache theater group. Her first play, La llamada de Lauren, in which she also played the role of Rosa, was staged in 1985. Since then she has written much more material, acted both on the stage and on television, and directed productions of her own works. She has also cultivated a prolific career as a conference speaker and essayist. Paloma Pedrero won the 1987 Premio Tirso de Molina for Invierno de luna alegre.

About the director: Manjari Kaul holds a Master's Degree in Arts and Aesthetics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and a Bachelor's in English Literature from Delhi University. As a member of the dramatics society in college, she directed and acted in a number of plays including Ariel Dorfman's Widows and Jean Genet's The Maids. In 2005 she won the Excellence in Acting award at the Old World Theatre festival. In 2006 and 2007 she won the Best Actor award at Lady Irwin College and Khalsa College, Delhi. In 2012 she directed Chronicle of a Death Foretold, an adaptation of the novella by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and That Photograph, an adaptation of What are the Chances by Kellie Powell, under the banner of her own theatre group called Improper Fractions. The plays were performed at Studio Safdar and Akshara Theatre in New Delhi. Manjari works extensively with children, engaging them in understanding their own bodies to communicate, learn and comprehend real and imagined worlds. She also, occasionally writes about cinema and the visual arts. She is interested in exploring the intersections between theory and praxis in theatre.
