Event Description : Punjabi Mela under the programme on `Delhi Celebrates’ by Punjabi Academy.

Every cultural aspect of Punjabi life of the yore and its present day manifestation will be on display. The event will give a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of the people from the land of five rivers. To make this gala event a part of cultural history of Delhi, an ambiance will be created in such a way that it looks like a Traditional Mela (Festival) of Punjabi village. All Punjabi instruments like the fast-slipping-into-oblivion -- charkha (spinning wheel) of Punjabi girls, their art of knitting -- Phulkari, making of lassi (sweetened milk) and playing of old musical instruments - Been, Algoza and Rabab - will create an aura of a typical Punjabi Mela. Besides this, there would also be the traditional Punjabi food including Makki di Roti and Sarson da Saag to entice the taste buds. In addition to various stalls, a traditional Punjabi Bazaar is planned where Punjabi Jutti -- shoes), Phulkaris, Naale-Prandey and wooden goods will be put on open sale.

Nihang Singhs will be performing their popular martial art Gatka. Saal-Naqal performances will also catch the eyes of Art-lovers which will be re-invented by arranging a workshop in a village of Punjab.

In the evenings, this nostalgic journey through the Punjabi culture is sought to be filled with rendering of heart-throbbing live performances by top singers and dancers. Attempts are being made to present a panorama of all ages that would enthral the audience and give a glimpse of richness of the musical traditions. Performers of international fame are being approached to participate. The exquisite fusion of Bhangra-Giddha and modern dances would also be presented.

It seems Punjab is coming to celebrate the Spring season to Delhi. Won't you Join us?
