Event Description : Art Konsult presents 'Elements of the Earth'
An exhibition that explores the role Primitive art has played in the development of contemporary art today and the shift in traditional art through the works of various contemporary & folk artists.

Elements of the Earth

Tribal, folk & traditional art found in India is extensive. Generations have carried forward ancient forms of visual language through the ages and even today we get to see the most naive & honest expressions in these art forms.. They bear with them the experiences and memories of different places and their art often consists of the transient and dynamic pattern of life. The rural, tribal, folk or Lok Kala and various ancient arts constitute the matrix of human expression.

These primal arts offer the artist a new dimension for searching his/her visual language. Providing a new perspective, new possibilities for ocular jugglery, the joy of exploring creatively, art that has been practiced since the beginning of culture and yet, has a certain freshness, simplicity and honesty about it.  Artists feel free to focus on conception and stylized emotion rather than mere renderings of what they see. In certain works the influence is quite evident whereas in others it is subtle and only one with dexterous familiarity of the primordial arts can gauge the association. The inspiration may not always translate into direct visuality, often it transcends in the guise of a sub conscious memory or thought. Looking back at a vast treasure of artistic cultural heritage these artists have found plenty of inspiration in these primitive forms, reliefs, ritualistic masks, characteristic patterns, bold colours and strong lines that catalyzed a radical transformation in contemporary art. There were many modern masters that drew inspiration from primal arts like Manjit Bawa, M F Husain who often spoke of an early fascination for Indian tribal and folk art. Then there is the famous legacy of Jamini Roy one of the most influential painters of the 20th century who took direct inspiration from the folk paintings of Bengal.

We explore these traces, mild and strong that have paved their way into contemporary art. We observe the narrowing of the divide between Art and Folk & Tribal Art. Likewise, in folk art, tradition is still adhered to but at the same time new ideas have been allowed to seep in which show measured and deliberate adaptation to contemporary styles.
