Event Details : National Law University, Delhi presents Gurcharan Das's '9 Jakhoo Hill' Play.
Set in the autumn of 1962, in Simla, when the Indo-China war was waging, 9 Jakhoo Hill, in a way, is about the changing social order- the old middle class giving way to the new. Into the desperately idle lives of a Simla-based family, who had seen better days, come another; insanely ambitious- Deepak with his exuberance and ambition and his mother Chitra with her boorish and nouveau-riche ways. Well-bred, handsome, intelligent and romantic, Deepak is the glistening streak of white amidst the veritable shades of grey on stage. Chitra, his mother, is overly possessive of him. Rai Saheb, an influential government officer mirrors the tactless society of Simla and its pretentious ways. The play is a narrative by Karan Chand, a professor, who has spent his entire life in the company of books, harbours tender feelings for his niece Ansuya who on the other hand dreams of Bombay and its eventfulness. He tries to grapple with those feelings throughout. His sister Amrita wants to hold on to those few remaining shards of the grandeur of her life before the Partition. As their paths intersect, contrasting hues are smeared on the canvasses of their lives: of the profound reminiscence of the glorious past; of the stronghold of Indian mothers on their sons; of love, ambition and betrayal. Which oxymoronically entangled emotion shall triumph?

Director : Harshit Kohli
