Event Details : ʻWalking: a dialogue between art and social movementʼ Exhibition of contemporary art on contemporary affairs.
ʻWalking; a dialogue between art and social movementʼ, brings together works by three artists exploring their understanding of a Gandhian inspired land rights movement, Ekta Parishad. They reflect on the lives of people with no apparent economic or political influence who choose non-violent protest - the act of walking a long distance - to highlight contraventions of their legal rights. The artworks underline the sustained, creative and collaborative intelligence required for satyagraha.
The dates of the exhibition coincide with Gandhiʼs birthday and International Non-Violence Day, 2 October, when one lakh adivasi and landless farmers start a month-long padayatra, walking and sleeping along the road from Gwalior to Delhi. This extraordinary event, Jan Satyagraha 2012, is being coordinated by Ekta Parishad along with 1,700 other NGOs across India. Ekta Parishad is one of the worldʼs largest non-violent social movements, focusing on land and forest rights at national and local level. Each of the artists brings the authenticity of their experience to the exhibition; they require us to assess our understanding of fairness and justice in local and international society. Photographs by Simon Williams from the UK explore the multifarious aspects of social mobilisation from portraits of individuals taking part to the emotional power of collective
activity. Installation, paintings and film by Vikram Nayak, Delhi artist, embody the social
status and spiritual condition of adivasis and their connection to earth from time immemorial. Film by Nesa Gschwend from Switzerland focuses on human rights and the lives of people in an adivasi village in Madhya Pradesh. The exhibitionʼs strong blend of international contemporary artistic practice and issues of immediacy to Indian society brings fresh thinking to philosophers, writers, artists and members of the public interested in the politics of poverty and the culture of people whose traditional life styles and livelihoods are under threat.

ʻknotted threadsʼ, a book by Nesa Gschwend
With Alka Pande, Martin Strub, Thomas Imboden

knotted threads captures the continuous dialogue of the Swiss artist Nesa Gschwend with India. Her installations, objects, performances, videos and drawings tell the stories of her observations and encounters, Nesa Gschwend‘s starting point for an artistic inquiry into India‘s multi-layered reality.
She confronts us with the particularities of a culture alien to her, and mirrors them in her own, thus tying the knot between clashing worlds through her art.
