"Symphony of Straight Lines" an exhibition of paintings by S. K. Sahni at Triveni Kala Sangam - 13th to 23rd July 09

Event Details : Recent Works by S. K. Sahni “Symphony of Straight Lines”.
Artist’s Statement : Shortest distance between two points is a straight line that does not exist in nature and is a creative concept of a man. It has no emotive quality of its own but is capable of evoking unique experiences.
Thus a straight line is pure, unsentimental and unconditional of any subjective feelings. However, when placed in conjunction with other lines, it may evoke different emotions and moods. The works displayed in this exhibition are executed in the past 3-4 years to portrait glimpses of these emotive qualities of the straight line, which has been changed as straight edge in the present series.
For my creative expression, I search image in space with straight lines. In the present series, the line is replaced by the masking tape of different thickness. The image is allowed to develop & establish its own identity. Pains taxingly – line by line – the image is being built gradually. It passes through various stages by adding colour and is allowed to take its shape. Finally the masking tapes are removed and image is revealed.
I do not know from where it has come. It is compulsive activity, partially spontaneous & partially intellectual. The image is free from any pre-conceived thoughts, notions and ideas. It is beyond recognition in terms of man made or nature made objects or realities and tensions of life. Thus it is free from any such bondage.
The works on display have been nursed with devotion & toil. These are my play games through which I create, enjoy and have experienced unending ways to explore my creative search.
