  • Synopsis : "Women in Black - Art & Paradox"
  • The concept of fusing three creative disciplines of painting, theatre and music, using contemporary life as its theme is an unusual one!! We are using a women centric topic, weaving art as the backdrop and stage, the play as the body and music as a parallel layer to the creative. It is in the experiment of fusing art canvases, theatrical concepts in the glove of music that the true heart of the play lies, women’s work, women’s stories... a three tier experiment.
  • The theatrical piece 'Women in Black' is the story of a mother and daughter relationship that looks like it’s moving on divergent tracks but fate makes them converge and travel parallel to each other. Shivani 30, lives in a small bed sitter in Delhi, Huaz Khas, and has moved away from a small city in pursuit of a great dream, a great job, a great relationship…and all the colours of life. Maina 48, is played by the same actress who is the hard working mother of Shivani and lives in a small town. No big dreams or great ambitions here. Her peace lies in the pieces of her life…. and its faded colours. The two women speak a monologue on the phone to each other and slowly unravel the underlying similarities of their lives. On the surface it looks so dissimilar!
  • The canvases embody the set, flinging open the doors in all directions not just on the angst, loneliness and strength of women. The paintings accomplish the light leap from one creative form into another, dressing the play in bold colours. Live music, soothes with a magic all its own, picking up the daughter's life in western style and the mother's life in an Indian rendition. The vibrant strokes of the painters highlight the deep heart of the story, and the live singing holds us in its delicate palm. To march art, theatre and music on to stage is an experiment rich with challenge.
