About the Lecture / Speaker :The Friendship Between Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and noted Cultural Ideologue Tenshin Okakura.
Japan and India share a broad history of friendship and interaction between our two peoples in the modern period. This is especially true about the close ties between Indian Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore and the noted Japanese philosopher and cultural ideologue, Tenshin Okakura in the early part of the 20th century which has been will documented. Their perceptions on the concept of Asia, nationalism and civilizations are still relevant in today’s times.
Prof. Kazuo Azuma was born in 1931, and obtained his Master’s degree in Indian Philosophy from the University of Tokyo in 1959. Thereafter, he did his D.Lit (Honoris Causa) on Tagore Studies from the Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta in 1986. Besides his llong teaching career in Japan, he has also taught at the Visva Bharati University as Reader and Head of the Department of Japanese Studies from 1967 to 1971.
Prof. Azuma will provide an insight into the special relationship between Rabindranath Tagore and Tenshin Okakura, and its influence on each other’s life and work.
